End of Claire’s Day School Summer Recap
CHECK OUT WHAT YOUR KIDS HAVE BEEN UP TO IN OUR SUMMER RECAP!
Summer has been full of fun activities and learning here at Claire’s Day School! Being our first semester in the new location, it has been great for us to get settled in and geared up for fall. Here is a Summer recap of the programs your kids have attended over Summer 2018!
Bio-Mimicry with Mrs. Janss
Our 5-6 year olds spent the Summer learning about nature, science and the correlation they have to how things are made. This way of design has engineers and creators looking to nature for inspiration on how to craft new ideas and improve old inventions. For example, the bullet train in London was creating a sonic boom that was bothersome to locals, so they changed the nose of the train to be like the King Fisher Bird’s beak after the engineers saw how quiet the bird was when diving into water.
Another subject they learned and loved was early robotics. Mrs. Janss class made hand structures out of paper, plastic straw pieces and string to show how the hand is connected and how fingers move. Nature is full of shapes and patterns that make things work together smoothly, so the class learned about how bee hives have hexagon shaped cones to hold more eggs and honey in their shape. They replicated the shapes in arts and crafts to be displayed in the school’s hallway.
Under The Sea with Mrs. Gill
The 4’s and 5’s spent the Summer at the ocean during Mrs. Gill’s “Under The Sea” program. They learned about all the different oceans, but particularly loved the arctic ocean where they made paper penguins. They also learned about the different zones such as the midnight and twilight zone. Shark week was a huge hit, too.
Another favorite subject was learning about ocean animals that have special characteristics, such as bio-luminescence animals that glow in the dark, and how an octopus has suctions on their tentacles so they can move around. Each ocean and animal was shown through a video of the animals in their natural habitat, where the kids could see what they did in the wild.
Oh The Places We Go with Mrs. Gibbons
Mrs. Gibbons took our 3.5-4 year olds all over the map this Summer! Through out the program, they went to places such as the dinosaur museum, outer space, the beach and much more. A class favorite was when the class went fishing. The group worked together to make a big boat out in the yard, then, using magnet hooks and paper clip fish, they spent the afternoon casting their lines. Making s’mores was another big hit when the kids went camping (as shown in photo below).
The program was designed to develop pre-reading and pre-math, while keeping the kids having fun and engaged. They learned story-telling and came up with plot lines about whales and sharks, or what Mrs. Gibbons would do or where she would go if she were a shark. Their big group project was to make a large whale that hangs from the hall ceiling, and the kids loved working together to make it happen.
Now coming into our Fall Semester, we are so excited to create and learn new things at Claire’s Day School. We cannot wait to see what is in store for us!
